How To Root Huawei P20 Pro : Step By Step Guide

Huawei P20 Pro got launched recently into the market. And users who bought it might be waiting until someone finds a rooting method. But you don’t have to wait anymore. I found a method to Root Huawei p20 pro with ease. Huawei uses EMUI OS based on Android. All you need is a computer with fastboot and ADB drivers installed. If you don’t know how to install those drivers there are a lot of guides and applications out there. This rooting method includes rooting with the help of Magisk. Installing Magisk will give you root privileges and let you install Viper4Android and other mods with ease.

Root Huawei P20 Pro

Before we start to root Huawei P20 Pro you should know few things. As you are trying to play with the android files you might brick your phone if you do it wrong. So follow the below steps carefully and you will be fine and your phone too. I advise you to take a backup of files like images, videos etc., or just copy them to an external card. Also rooting a phone will void its warranty. But as this is Huawei P20 you don’t have to worry about the warranty at all. Let’s get into steps now!

Pre-requisites:

  1. A computer with ADB and fastboot drivers installed. If you are a developer and you have android studio installed then you can go to the platform-tools folder and use the fastboot and adb there.
  2. Huawei P20 Pro phone model no: CLT-L09 or CLT-L29.
  3. Enable Developer Options by going into Settings-> About Phone-> Tap 7 times on Build number.
  4. Enable OEM Unlock option by going into Developer Options.
  5. Download patched boot image file of Magisk.

Unlocking The Bootloader:

1. Go to: emui.huawei.com/en/plugin/unlock/index
2. Log in using your Huawei Account, make one if you don’t have it yet
3. “Agree” to Huawei unlocking agreement presented
4. Input all necessary values related to your device (the one you want to unlock) – IMEI, Model Number etc
5. Click “Commit
6. You will get a pop-up dialogue, containing your unlock KEY. Save this key or screenshot the screen, you gonna need it to unlock your phone
7. Now, plug your phone into your PC. Assumed that you got USB debugging enabled, pop up will appear on your phone screen, asking whether you want to allow the PC to access your phone or not. Authorize the request
8. Fire up ADB on your CMD/Terminal. and type

Code:
adb devices

9. Your devices should be listed on your adb window, if it isn’t, either you didn’t install the adb driver properly, or your USB port has problem
10. Now type

Code:
adb reboot bootloader

to reboot your phone to fastboot mode
11. Once the phone is booted up to the fastboot mode screen, type this in your CMD windows :

Code:
fastboot oem unlock [your UNLOCK KEY here]

– without the brackets
12. A confirmation dialogue should appear on your phone screen, give you a warning about unlocking the bootloader, just go with proceeding the process (YOU WILL LOSS YOUR USER DATA]
13. Once the unlocking process is finished, your phone will boot up to initial set up the stage
14. Set up everything up until you can re-enable USB Debugging option in Developer Options (you can skip all account stuff, security and else, you gonna do it again anyway after ROOTING)
15. Plug back your phone, and from your CMD Windows, retype this code :

Code:
adb reboot bootloader

16. Your phone will be rebooted to FASTBOOT MODE again – now close your CMD Windows

Flashing The Patched Boot Image To Root Huawei P20 Pro

  1. Copy the download image file to the folder where the ADB and Fastboot files are present.
  2. Connect your Huawei P20 Pro to the computer. Hold shift and right click on the mouse. You will see “Open a command prompt” option. Click on it.
  3. Type this code in the command prompt to reboot your phone to fastboot mode.

    adb reboot bootloader
  4. After your phone is in bootloader mode type this code to flash the download patched boot image file.
    Code:
    fastboot flash ramdisk patched_boot.img
  5. Now you can reboot your phone by typing this code:
    fastboot reboot
  6. After your phone is turned on you can see that you have root enabled.
